Central - Unit Information
Unit History
Central District was formed in 1993 with The South and North District combining with a total of 44 schools under the leadership of LTC (NCC) Kannoosamy. Today, there are a total of 50 units under the baton of LTC (NCC) Khoo Thiam Huat, Stuart.
In 2000, Central District shifted from its premises in the old Springleaf Camp to the present Amoy Quee Camp where the rest of the districts and elements are housed together under the name, HQ NCC.
Before Springleaf Camp was set up, Nee Soon Primary School occupied the premises. How long have the building been standing in her original position remains a mystery till today. The first District Commander was none other than LTC (NCC) Kannoosamy. The newly organized Central District was formed up with the Springleaf Camp as its District HQ. Dr Arthur Beng, Chairman of the NCC Council, declared the camp officially open on 25th Jan 1990.
Springleaf Camp has hosted numerous camps. For example, the earlier batches of CLT Courses were carried out in Springleaf and courses such as Specialists' Course, UDI Courses, Part A, B and D camps, NCC Basic Airborne preparation camps and many other activities as well.
Even more prestigious recognition was given to Springleaf Camp when the then Singapore Chief of Defence Force, LG Bey Soo Kiang, visited the camp. LG Bey was a former NCC Air Cadet in RI. He continued his years in service as a CLT.
Since 1993, Central District has produced several outstanding units that have been winning numerous awards such as annual shooting competitions, orienteering competitions and most importantly, the best unit competitions. Schools that are responsible for these incredible feats are none other than SJI, Cedar Girls, and not to mention Gan Eng Seng. Throughout all these years, several other schools other than these units have made Central District proud by obtaining a gold award in the Best Unit competitions like the units from neighbourhood schools such as Yishun Town secondary and Zhonghua Secondary.
